Private Client - Crowcombe, Somerset

Contemporary western red cedar clad self-build extension to an historic stone building in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Somerset. This extension is designed to be a contemporary take on the existing traditional dwelling and as sustainable as possible. It is separated from the original building with a slim glazed link and houses a living area for the family downstairs, and a master bedroom suite upstairs with a Juliet balcony overlooking the AONB upstairs.

 

The timber cladding was sourced from a local saw mill 10 miles away from the site, the south-eastern roof pitch (and new garage roof) utilises solar slates to reduce the dwelling's dependence on oil by helping with the hot water load as well as providing electricity. The walls are formed from timber I beams with cellulose insulation in between and the floor will be a limecrete/glasscrete construction which is excellent at managing moisture as well as making the new underfloor heating system as efficient as possible. All materials used in the build are designed to be low carbon and sustainable as well as breathable in order to protect the existing fabric of the building.
